We saw many of these terns from the fishing boat. They flew over the water, diving in occasionally to grab fish. We saw more of them near the docks than out in the ocean. Then again, I was too busy being seasick to pay much attention to the birds way out there.

You can tell these apart from the common laughing gulls and herring gulls by the shape of their wings (narrower here) and the black cap on the head. Laughing gulls have an all black head, while herring gulls have white heads.
