Bird Photos / Poplar Island, MD

6/5/2013

I accompanied a Fish and Wildlife Service team for the day on June 5th, 2013. They let me join them while they inspected Osprey nests and counted Tern and Cormorant nests. Thanks to Pete McGowan and his team for hosting me and allowing me to get these photos.

We started at a small island a few hundred meters from Poplar Island to count the Tern nests. These were mostly Forster's Terns, with a few Common too. Their nests were built in small depressions on the ground.

We saw many Osprey and their nests on and around the island.

We counted over 2000 Double-crested Cormorant nests in a nearby cell. We saw many adults and babies close-up.

We saw some shorebirds too. Most had already migrated north, but a few stuck around.
