Baby Robins June-July 2008

7/23/2008

We had an American Robin build a nest and raise 3 babies on our front door wreath at home in Havre de Grace, MD, during the summer of 2008. We first found a nest on top of the wreath in May, but when we tried to move the wreath and nest to a nearby place that would reduce disturbances from us using our front door, the nest fell off. We saw no eggs in that nest and the bird did not do anything to repair it. Thinking the robin had moved on, we put the wreath back on the door.

In mid June, however, we found a new nest on top of the wreath. We decided to leave it and hope that the bird and babies would not be bothered by our presence. The robin initially laid 4 eggs, one per day, but one of the eggs fell out or was taken out. I found it broken up on the porch below the nest one day.

When I noticed the first egg beginning to hatch on June 23rd, I decided to photograph the nest and babies daily to document the growth of the baby robins. I took a series of photos every day (with one exception) from the day the first bird hatched, June 23rd, until the day the last bird left the nest, July 8th. The birds did not seem to be bothered by our use of the front door. Click on the thumbnail picture or date below to see larger photos of the birds in the nest for that particular day.
